Overview of Databases

In most cases, databases are organized collections of information. Examples include online catalogs (databases of information about items held by particular libraries), electronic periodical indexes such as Readers Guide Abstracts, and full-text databases such as Britannica Online, Lexis-Nexis, etc.

In order to use databases effectively, it is helpful to be familiar with the following:

  • structure of a database
  • types of databases
  • database coverage
  • database attributes
