Information Literacy Level One Tutorials (First Year Seminar)

Tutorial 1 (First Year Seminar) - This tutorial will help you choose an appropriate topic for research, and focus that topic to suit the limits of time available and type of assignment.

Choose a topic appropriate to the assignment
Identify search terms relevant to the topic

Tutorial 2 (First Year Seminar) - This tutorial provides an overview of how to search for and retrieve relevant print and electronic resources on your topic using the Library’s books & articles search tool.

IL Outcomes

Effectively search for and identify sources using the library books and articles search tool
Evaluate the relevance of search results

Information Literacy Level Two Tutorials (Area B2: Life Sciences)

Tutorial 3 (Life Sciences) - This tutorial will introduce you to the scientific peer review process and how it contributes to the reliability of scientific knowledge. You will also learn to recognize the structure of typical scholarly scientific articles.

IL Outcomes

Understand how the scientific peer review process contributes to the reliability of scientific knowledge; effectively search for and identify peer-reviewed articles on the topic.

Tutorial 4 (Life Sciences) - This tutorial will help you learn how to search for and retrieve relevant, peer-reviewed sources on a research topic. You will learn to choose relevant library databases and combine keywords and synonyms to develop a search strategy. You will evaluate information sources using several important criteria to help you establish the credibility of the source and its author(s).

Select library databases appropriate to the topic.
Identify and combine keywords and synonyms to develop a search strategy; effectively execute the search in appropriate library databases.
Evaluate the credibility of information sources, using the following criteria:
- Expertise & Credentials
- Purpose & Audience
- Point of View

Information Literacy Level Two Tutorials (Area D2: U.S. Histories & Democratic Participation)

Tutorial 3 (U.S. Histories) - This tutorial will introduce you to the peer review process and how it contributes to the reliability of knowledge. You will also learn to recognize the structure of typical scholarly journal articles and learn to distinguish between primary historical evidence and secondary historical sources.

IL Outcomes

Effectively identify relevant scholarly sources on the topic.
Understand the distinctions between primary historical evidence and secondary historical sources.

Tutorial 4 (U.S. Histories) - This tutorial will help you learn how to search for and retrieve relevant, peer-reviewed sources on a research topic. You will learn to choose relevant library databases and combine keywords and synonyms to develop a search strategy. You will evaluate information sources using several important criteria to help you establish the credibility of the source and its author(s).
